Scientific session: Innovative and additive manufacturing technology – new technological solutions for 3D printing of metals and composite materials The 50th anniversary of scientific and didactic work of Professor Stanisław Tkaczyk
Innovative and additive manufacturing technology – new technological solutions for 3D printing of metals and composite materials is the title of currently running international project, were the Institute of Engineering Materials and Biomaterials of Silesian University of Technology (SUT) is a partner.
The aim of the project is to create a unique research platform in the field of „Innovative additive production technologies” dealing with interdisciplinary issues that will support and strengthen long-term intersectoral cooperation. The main idea of the project is to develop cooperation between research units and the industrial sector as part of joint research and development. The project focuses on research work in the field of 3D printing of metal powders by means of selective laser melting technology (SLM) and fused deposition modelling (FDM). Additive manufacturing is a multidisciplinary issue requiring joint solutions of designers, technologists, meteorologists, metallographers, surface engineers and other specialists with high technical education. Also related to 3D printing are other necessary processes, namely a new creative approach to designing (use of topological optimization and design of bionic structures), preparation of manufacturing and the manufacturing process, and post-processing (heat treatment, chip machining on CNC machine tools, surface treatment, 3D measuring and 3D scanning).
The key activities of the project are aimed at ensuring the bilateral transfer of unique knowledge, experience and know-how of the entities involved, preparation and development of a long-term strategy for cooperation between research units and the industrial sector, conducting joint research work, strengthening existing cooperation and developing new cooperation with the industrial sector – entities based in the ITI Ostrava agglomeration and the creation and development of a joint research centre. The added value of the project is to develop new technological solutions (3D printing of metals and composite materials) and innovative technologies, considering the current technical and technological requirements in the engineering industry. The project will enable the creation of a unique research team capable of implementing specific practical tasks and conducting a two-way transfer of knowledge, experience and research results to the industrial sector and final applications.
The project consortium consists of research units: VŠB-Technical University of Ostrava (Czech Republic) – project leader, Klast aditivní výroby, zs (Czech Republic), Fraunhofer Institut für Werkzeaugmaschinen und Umformtechnik IWU (Germany), Silesian University of Technology – SUT (Poland), University of Žilina (Slovakia) and industrial partners: V-NASS, as, Vítkovice – výzkum a vývoj – technické aplikace as, BREBECK Composite sro, dk metal prominent sro, Advanced Metal Powders, sro.
The project is funded by the European Union of the Czech Republic under the European Structural and Investment Funds, Operational Programme Research, Development and Education in 2018-2021.
Scientific session: Integration of advanced experiments, computation and data for Duplex Stainless Steel joining innovation
The purpose of this proposed exchange program is to bring together an EU and international team of researchers with a wide variety of expertise and research establishment in welding and joining, materials developments and characterisation, computer aided engineering, physical/chemistry based predictive modelling and data science to tackle the challenges faced by the industry and academics for R&I in DSS. This requires specialist knowledge and innovation, advanced equipment and cost-effective solutions that will benefit from a collaborative approach. The proposed research covers the fundamental studies of welding of duplex stainless steels in similar and dissimilar material systems as well as developing new technologies and materials. The proposal is for a RISE project involving 8 partners (5 from MS/AC and 3 from TC) with an extensive exchange of researchers (33 researchers and 110 person-months) over 4 years to fully explore the complementary strength and synergies within the consortium.
The project will establish a systematic data system for the key physical structure/phases relative to the welding and corrosion of DSS. The project will establish the optimum welding regimes for enhanced mechanical and corrosion performance with the aids of hybrid computer aid design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) and physical based material modelling. The data and advanced approach will be used to develop new disruptive manufacturing technology to control the structure, phase and defects in the welding in particularly the heat affected zones (HAZ), which is the most critical/limiting issue for manufacturing and applications of DSS and other material systems.
The work will jointly explore the use of modern data and predictive modelling technology in developing dissimilar/hybrid material systems for more significant weight/cost reduction. The resulted advanced data system, new materials, welding process and hybrid lightweight materials will contribute the research and innovation capacity in Europe and the world on DSS, stainless steels and associated systems with a long term economic and social impact.
The advanced data system will serve as a pivoting platform for future research and innovation, speeding up material or product development cycle, with fundamental contribution to academic and industrial R&D. It will enhance the R&I capacity of inter/multidisciplinary intersectoral partners, and jointly developing major break-through technologies. The work combined several novel approaches I R&D, will contribute the development of Industry 4.0 for welding and significantly accelerate the development of the Research skills, knowledge and career of the ECR with lasting impact in the EU and beyond.
The following institutions are involved in the project: Liverpool John Moores University (United Kingdom) as a project coordinator, the international research units: Politechnika Śląska (Poland), Hogskolan Vast (Sweden), Electric Welding Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (Ukraine), Yanshan University (China), University of Malaya (Malaysia) and industrial partner Ermetal Otomotiv Ve Esya Sanayi Tic. A.S. (Turkey).
International Student Scientific Conference TalentDetector2022_Summer
One of the didactic activities of modern universities, expanding the possibilities of acquiring knowledge, is participation in student conferences, which in recent years are experiencing a renaissance. One of such proposals is the International Student Scientific ConferenceTalentDetector2022 aimed at integrating the student and scientific environment and the young staff of Silesian scientific centers dealing with materials technology issues. It is a place that gives the opportunity to exchange experiences, knowledge, skills and presentations of current scientific achievements, developing and expanding students’ interests in the field of material engineering, surface engineering, biomaterials and biomedical engineering, nanotechnology, pro-ecological technologies and computer science of materials. The conference allows the presentation of projects carried out with the industry and projects implemented as part of the Intelligent Development Operational Programs.
